Background
New Zealand mobile start-up Two Degrees (Formerly known as Econet Wireless NZ and NZ communications) is the third mobile network operator to open its doors in New Zealand.
NZ Communications rebranded in May 2009 to 2degrees.
2degrees launched their network in 2009, a 900mhz GSM network with EDGE support. 3G (WCDMA) coverage is to be provided in 2010. Nationwide coverage is provided through a domestic roaming agreement with Vodafone NZ.
An agressive advertising campaign marked the launch of two degrees. Contracts, on-net calling, 'best-mate' calling, and confusing plans were primary targets.
Two Degrees were also involved in a campaign ('drop the rate, mate') against the current state of mobile termination rates. This campaign used questionable statistics and potentially misleading information to fits its aim of 'exposing' high termination rates.
Coverage
Two degrees itself provides limited coverage on its own networks - with coverage provided in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown. Users outside of Two Degrees coverage will roam on Vodafone New Zealands GSM network which provides nationwide coverage.
Users within two degrees networks coverage footprint will not be able to roam on vodafones network. [1]
Pricing plans
Unlike other operators, Two Degrees only provides a single prepaid pricing plan. Other operators offer a limited set of prepaid pricing plans, with a massive array of postpaid (or contract based) plans.
Regular rates:
- 44 cents per national minute and to select international destinations. Calls rounded up to the nearest minute.
- 9 cents per text message (SMS).
- 50 cents per MB of data.
Two degrees also provides 'magic top ups' when you top your prepaid connection up. These give further benefits which lasts for 30 days:
- 22 cents per minute for calls on net and select international destinations.
- Free nationwide text messages (SMS) .
